Housing

Everyone deserves a safe and secure home.

We aim for homelessness in our city to be rare, brief and non-recurring and work towards this goal every day through short-term support, long-term solutions and advocacy for change within the systems that contribute to homelessness.

Having a place to call home changes everything. A safe, stable home is the foundation for good health, strong whānau, learning, and work - and it’s essential for healing from trauma, addiction, and hardship.

At Auckland City Mission – Te Tāpui Atawhai, we believe ending homelessness in Aotearoa is possible. It takes courage, long-term commitment, and solutions that honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi and are built in partnership with Māori.

Through housing, wraparound support, and community connection, we walk alongside people as they rebuild their lives - restoring dignity, independence, and hope.

Homelessness is a complex problem without one single solution.

In order to respond to homelessness, we need a diverse range of housing and support options for the whānau we support and a strong supply of housing.

Every journey to find a home is different. From emergency housing, and residential services, to ongoing support to access and sustain permanent accommodation. We work alongside people to support them on their journey.

Over the years, we have helped many people through their homelessness journey. One person, Potoz, had spent much of her life without a permanent safe home. After support from many different areas of the Mission, Potoz now proudly has a place to call ‘home’. Find out more about Potoz’s story.

In his thirties, Bryne Gregory had it all. The former surf lifesaving champion and firefighter had a successful building business and a loving family with three young daughters. But when his business started to fail during the global recession, Bryne turned to alcohol to cope.

“I fell into a deep depression. I was trying to use alcohol to boost me up and progressively it got worse and worse until things got out of control. It destroyed my family.”

Bryne lost everything - his business, his family and his home.
